Terms of Service

Last updated 8 October 2026

These are the rules for using Berry. We have written them to be read, not skimmed. If anything is unclear, email us and a person will answer.

1. Who we are

Berry is made by SyntaxPlanet. "We" on this page means SyntaxPlanet.

Berry is published and operated by SyntaxPlanet. These terms are an agreement between you and SyntaxPlanet, and they cover the Berry app and berrykids.app. You can reach us any time at hello@syntaxplanet.com. How we handle personal information is explained in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.

2. Who Berry is for

Grown-ups make the account. Children read.

Berry is a reading app for children aged 2 to 16. A parent, legal guardian or teacher creates the account and adds child profiles. Children use Berry under that account; they never sign up on their own.

You must be at least 18 (or the age of majority where you live) to create an account. By creating one you accept these terms for yourself and on behalf of the children you add, and you confirm you have the authority to do so.

3. Your account

Keep your sign-in safe. You are responsible for what happens under it.

You sign in with an email address, Google or Apple. Give accurate details and keep your sign-in private. If you think someone else is using your account, change your password and tell us.

One account can hold up to six child profiles. Each child has their own progress, streaks and badges; nothing mixes between them. Accounts are for one household and may not be shared between families.

One full book to start, a two-page peek of every other book. Berry Family unlocks everything.

The first book opened on a device can be read in full, for as long as you like. Every other book opens for a two-page peek.

Berry Family is a subscription that unlocks every page of every book, Read To Me narration on all of them, and offline downloads, for every child profile on the account. We add, update and occasionally retire books, so the library changes over time.

5. Subscriptions, trials and renewals

Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel in your phone's settings.

  • Plans. Berry Family is offered monthly or yearly. The price in your currency is shown on the subscription screen before you confirm, and again on Apple's or Google's own confirmation.
  • Trial. Eligible new subscribers get a 3-day free trial. Unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends, the plan you chose is charged automatically when the trial ends. One trial per person, as determined by Apple or Google.
  • Auto-renewal. Payment is charged to your Apple ID or Google Play account at confirmation of purchase (or when the trial ends). The subscription renews automatically for the same period and price unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account is charged for renewal within the 24 hours before the period ends.
  • Cancelling. Manage or cancel in your Apple ID or Google Play subscription settings. Deleting the app or your Berry account does not cancel the subscription. After cancelling, Berry Family stays active until the end of the period you have paid for.
  • Price changes. If the price changes, Apple or Google will tell you in advance and, where required, ask you to agree before you are charged the new price.
  • Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their policies. Nothing in these terms limits a right to a refund you have under the law where you live.

Step-by-step instructions are on How billing works.

6. Using the books

Read them in Berry with your family. Do not copy or share them.

The stories, illustrations, narration, music and sound effects in Berry belong to SyntaxPlanet or its licensors. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to read and listen to them inside the app, for your household's private, non-commercial use, while your account is in good standing.

You may not copy, record, screen-capture for distribution, redistribute, publicly perform, sell, or use any of it to train software or in another product. Downloaded books stay on your device for offline reading while your subscription is active, and are for your family only.

Berry, the Berry bear and our logos are trademarks of SyntaxPlanet.

7. What you add

Your photos stay yours. You give us only what we need to show them to you.

If you add a photo for a child's avatar, you keep ownership of it. You give us a limited permission to store it and show it to you inside your own account, only to run Berry. Only add photos you have the right to use. We remove it when you delete it, the profile, or your account.

8. What you must not do

No hacking, no scraping, no sharing accounts.

  • Do not try to get around the peek, the grown-up gate or the subscription.
  • Do not scrape, copy, decompile or reverse-engineer the app or its content, except where the law expressly allows it.
  • Do not interfere with Berry's servers, security or other users, or use Berry for anything unlawful.
  • Do not create accounts with false details or by automated means, or share one account across families.

We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these rules. Where it is reasonable to, we will warn you first and explain why.

9. Ending your account

Leave any time. Delete everything from Settings.

You can stop using Berry whenever you want. To delete your account and every child profile under it, open the parent area, go to Settings and choose Delete account. It takes effect immediately and cannot be undone. You can also email us from the address on the account and we will delete it within 30 days and confirm by email. See Delete your account.

Remember to cancel your subscription separately with Apple or Google. If we ever close Berry, we will give you reasonable notice in the app.

10. Changes to these terms

If something important changes, we tell you inside the app first.

We may update these terms as Berry grows. For anything that affects your money or your data, we show a notice in the app before it takes effect. If you do not agree, you can stop using Berry and delete your account; continuing to use it after the change means you accept it.

We do our best, but Berry is provided as is. Our liability is limited to what you paid us. Your consumer rights stay.

We work hard to keep Berry running and its books right for their age groups, but we cannot promise it will always be available, uninterrupted or error-free. To the extent the law allows, Berry is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied.

To the extent the law allows, SyntaxPlanet is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid for Berry in the twelve months before the claim.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or fraud, and nothing removes rights you have under the consumer law of the country where you live. If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest still applies.

If you have a problem, please email us first; most things are fixed quickly that way.

12. Apple and Google

These terms are between you and us, not Apple or Google.

If you downloaded Berry from the Apple App Store, you acknowledge that these terms are between you and SyntaxPlanet only, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for Berry or its content, has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for it, and, to the extent the law allows, has no other warranty obligation for it; if Berry fails to conform to an applicable warranty you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price, if any. Apple is not responsible for handling any claim relating to Berry, including product liability claims, claims that Berry fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, consumer protection or privacy claims, or claims that Berry infringes someone's intellectual property; SyntaxPlanet is responsible for those to the extent these terms say so. You confirm you are not in a country subject to a US government embargo or on a US prohibited-party list. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.

Your use of the App Store or Google Play is also governed by Apple's and Google's own terms. Where those terms conflict with ours for something the store controls, such as payments and refunds, the store's terms apply.
