Children's Privacy

Last updated 8 October 2026 · Our notice to parents under COPPA, GDPR-K and the UK Children's Code

This page is for parents and guardians. It explains, in one place, how Berry treats information about children. It sits alongside our full Privacy Policy.

1. Our promise

The least information possible, used only to make reading work, and always under a parent's control.

  • No adverts, no selling of data, no chat, no links out to the web.
  • A first name and a birth year is all we ask about a child.
  • Nothing a child does is ever visible to another user.
  • A parent can see, change or delete everything, at any time.

2. Who operates Berry

SyntaxPlanet operates Berry and is responsible for children's information in it. Contact: hello@syntaxplanet.com. We are the only operator collecting information through Berry; the service providers listed in our Privacy Policy process it only on our behalf.

Children cannot sign up. Only an adult account holder can add a child.

  • Only an adult can create a Berry account, using a verified email address or a Google or Apple sign-in. Creating the account means agreeing to this notice and our Privacy Policy.
  • Children never type an email, a password or any contact details. They pick their own profile and read.
  • The parent area, purchases, settings and account deletion all sit behind a grown-up gate a young child cannot pass.
  • No profile can be created without the parent's account, and the parent can delete any profile at any time.

4. What we collect about a child

InformationWho provides itWhy
First name or nicknameParentTo greet the child and tell profiles apart
Birth year (never day or month)ParentTo choose books right for their age
Avatar, or an optional photoParentTo show which profile is which. Photos are optional, private to the account and removable.
Reading activity: books opened, pages read, Pick Your Path choices, minutes, streaks, badgesCollected as the child readsTo save progress across devices, award badges, and show the parent dashboard
App usage and crash data, with an age band (such as 6–8) but no name, profile or session idCollected automaticallyTo keep the app working and learn which books children enjoy, in aggregate

We do not collect a child's email, phone number, address, full date of birth, location, contacts or voice. Voice search, where available, is processed by the device's own speech service and never recorded or uploaded by Berry. Recent searches stay on the device.

5. How it is used

Only to provide Berry: showing the right books, saving progress, rewards, the parent dashboard, keeping the app secure and working, and improving the library. Never for advertising, never to build a profile for marketing, and never to contact the child.

6. Who it is disclosed to

We do not sell, rent or give children's information to anyone. It is stored with Google Firebase, our hosting provider, and processed by the providers named in our Privacy Policy only to run Berry. Usage and crash data reach Google in a form that does not include a child's name or profile. We disclose information only if the law requires it, or to protect a child's safety.

Berry has no public areas, so a child cannot make personal information public through the app.

7. Safe by design

  • Profiles are private by default and visible only to the account that created them.
  • Advertising identifiers and ad features are switched off in the app's build, and we never ask for tracking permission.
  • Every book is read and approved by a person on our team before it goes live.
  • Nothing in a child's screens asks them to buy anything, share anything, or leave the app.
  • A daily reading limit, set by the parent, winds down gently.

8. Your rights as a parent

Review, change, delete, or stop collection. Any time, free.

  • Review and change a child's profile in the parent area, or email us for a copy of everything we hold about your child.
  • Delete a child profile in the parent area; its progress, streaks, badges and photo go with it. Delete the whole account from Settings, or see Delete your account.
  • Refuse further collection: deleting a profile stops all collection about that child. You can tell us to stop at any time by emailing hello@syntaxplanet.com.

We may ask you to confirm you are the account holder before acting on an email request. We respond within 30 days.

If you think a child has used Berry without a parent's permission, tell us and we will delete the information.
